Quick answer: the Google Business Profile fixes that matter most are the right primary category, your real business name, accurate hours, a full list of services, real photos, and a steady flow of detailed reviews you reply to. Google ranks local results on relevance, distance and prominence. You can’t change distance, but every item on this checklist improves the other two.

When someone searches “dentist near me” or “roof repair in Dallas,” Google shows a map with three businesses before any website. That’s the map pack, and your Google Business Profile decides whether you’re in it. It also feeds Google’s AI answers and many of the facts other AI tools repeat about you.

Many profiles are set up once and then forgotten. This checklist covers 15 fixes in order of impact. Most take a few minutes. Want help beyond the checklist? See our SEO services, or see real results in our local SEO case study.

How does Google rank Business Profiles?

Google ranks local results on three things: relevance, distance and prominence. That comes from Google’s own help page on local ranking.

FactorWhat it meansWhat you control
RelevanceHow well your profile matches the searchCategories, services, description, review text
DistanceHow far you are from the searcherNothing, except an accurate address or service area
ProminenceHow well known and trusted you areReviews, ratings, links and mentions on other sites

Google also says there’s “no way to request or pay for a better local ranking.” So ignore anyone selling guaranteed map pack spots.

The 15-point Google Business Profile checklist

Work top to bottom. The first five fixes usually move the needle most.

Foundation: get these right first

  1. Verify your profile. Unverified profiles rarely rank. Google says verification shows you’re authorized to represent the business.
  2. Choose the most specific primary category. Experts in Whitespark’s 2026 Local Search Ranking Factors survey rated primary category the No. 1 local pack factor. Pick “Emergency Veterinarian Hospital,” not just “Veterinarian,” if that’s what you are.
  3. Add secondary categories. You can add up to nine more. Only add ones that describe real services you offer.
  4. Use your real business name. Adding keywords or cities to your name (“Joe’s Plumbing – Best Plumber Austin”) breaks Google’s guidelines and can get your profile suspended.
  5. Set accurate hours, including holidays. The same survey ranked business hours among the top five factors, since profiles open at the time of the search tend to show more. Update special hours before every holiday.

Content: help Google match you to more searches

  1. List every service. Add each service as its own item with a short description. “Drain cleaning,” “water heater install” and “sewer line repair” each match different searches.
  2. Write a clear description. You get 750 characters, but only about the first 250 show before “more.” Lead with what you do and where. Google doesn’t allow links, prices or promotions in this field.
  3. Set your service area or address correctly. If you go to customers and don’t serve them at your location, hide your address and list the cities or ZIP codes you cover.
  4. Fill in attributes. Options like “wheelchair accessible,” “online appointments” or “veteran-owned” help you match filtered searches.
  5. Add real photos every month. Show your team, your work, your vehicles and your storefront. Skip stock photos. Fresh photos also show Google and customers you’re active.

Trust: build prominence over time

  1. Ask every happy customer for a review. Create your review link in the profile dashboard and send it by text right after the job. Ask them to mention the service and their neighborhood.
  2. Reply to every review. Thank people by name and mention the job. For bad reviews, stay calm, own any mistake and offer to fix it offline.
  3. Answer common questions. Add your top FAQs to your website and keep your profile details complete, since Google and AI tools pull answers from both.
  4. Post updates. Use Google Posts for offers, events and recent projects. Post when you have something worth saying, not just to hit a schedule.
  5. Match your details everywhere. Your name, address, phone and website should be identical on your site, Yelp, BBB, Apple Maps, Bing Places and industry directories.

Which mistakes get profiles suspended?

Most suspensions come from a fake or keyword-stuffed name, a fake address, or review tricks. A suspended profile disappears from Maps until you appeal, which can take weeks.

MistakeWhy it’s risky
Keywords or cities in the business nameAgainst Google’s naming guidelines
Virtual office or PO box as your addressGoogle requires a real location you staff, or a hidden address for service-area businesses
Paying for reviews or offering discounts for themBreaks Google’s review policy and FTC rules on fake reviews
Several profiles for the same businessSeen as spam; keep one profile per real location
Big edits all at once (name, address and category)Can trigger re-verification; change one thing at a time

How does your profile affect AI search?

Google’s AI answers use Business Profile data directly, and other AI tools copy many of the same facts. Google’s guide for site owners tells businesses to keep their Business Profile information up to date to do well in AI features.

When ChatGPT or Google AI Mode recommends a local business, it looks for one that several sources agree on: a complete profile, good reviews that describe the work, and matching details across directories. A strong profile is the cheapest AI search upgrade a local business can make. FAQ

How long does it take to see results from optimizing my profile?

Quick fixes like the category, services and hours can change your visibility within a few weeks once Google processes them. Reviews and listings build up over months. Check your profile’s Performance tab monthly for calls, direction requests and website clicks to see the trend.

How many reviews do I need to rank?

There’s no magic number. It depends on your competitors. Look at the three businesses in your map pack and aim to match their count, then keep a steady pace. A few new reviews every month beats a big burst followed by silence.

Is Google Business Profile the same as Google My Business?

Yes. Google renamed Google My Business to Google Business Profile. You can now manage it directly from Google Search or Maps by searching your business name while logged in.

Do Google Posts help my ranking?

Posts are a small direct ranking factor at most. They’re still worth doing because they show customers you’re active and can highlight offers. Post when you have real news, a finished project or a seasonal offer.

Can I rank in a city where I don’t have an address?

It’s hard in the map pack, because distance is one of Google’s three factors. Service-area businesses can list the cities they cover, and a strong website page for each city helps you rank in regular results there.
