GEO (generative engine optimization) is the practice of making your business easy for AI tools like ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and Perplexity to find, trust and mention in their answers. Traditional SEO aims to rank your page in a list of links. GEO aims to get your business named and cited inside the AI’s written answer. For a small business, it mostly means doing good SEO plus keeping your business facts, reviews and outside mentions consistent.
If you’ve heard “GEO,” “AEO” and “AI SEO” and wondered whether you need yet another marketing service, this guide explains what GEO really is, where it came from, how it differs from SEO, and what a small business should actually do. For the full step-by-step playbook, see our pillar guide: How to get your business recommended by ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and Perplexity.
Where the term “GEO” came from
The term was introduced in a 2023 research paper by Princeton University and IIT Delhi researchers, later published at the KDD 2024 conference. The paper, “GEO: Generative Engine Optimization,” studied how websites could improve their visibility inside AI-generated answers. (Aggarwal et al.)
What the study found
- The authors tested content changes across a benchmark of 10,000 queries and reported that GEO methods “can boost visibility by up to 40% in generative engine responses.”
- The best-performing changes were adding quotations, adding statistics and citing sources.
- Keyword stuffing performed poorly. Old-school tricks don’t carry over.
- Pages that ranked lower in normal search gained the most, which is encouraging for small sites competing with big brands.
One caveat: the study ran in a controlled research setup, not on live ChatGPT or Google. Treat it as strong direction, not a guarantee.
How AI engines build their answers
AI search tools work in three steps: they search the web, read a few pages they trust, then write a summary and cite some of those sources.
- Retrieve: the engine searches its index (Google’s, Bing’s or its own) for pages related to the question.
- Read and weigh: it pulls facts from those pages and checks them against each other. Facts that appear consistently across trusted sites carry more weight.
- Write and cite: it writes an answer and links some of the sources it relied on.
GEO is about winning at all three steps: being findable, being trustworthy and being easy to quote.
GEO vs SEO vs AEO: what’s actually different
SEO, GEO and AEO overlap heavily. The difference is mainly where you want to show up.
| SEO | GEO | AEO | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stands for | Search engine optimization | Generative engine optimization | Answer engine optimization |
| Goal | Rank your pages in search results | Get mentioned and cited in AI-written answers | Be the direct answer (featured snippets, voice, AI answers) |
| Where you appear | Google and Bing results, the map pack | ChatGPT, AI Overviews, AI Mode, Perplexity, Copilot | Snippets, voice assistants, AI answers |
| Success metric | Rankings, clicks, calls | Mentions and citations in AI answers, AI referral traffic | Answer placements, zero-click visibility |
| Top tactics | Helpful pages, technical health, links, Google Business Profile | Consistent facts, reviews, outside mentions, quotable pages with sources | Question-based headings, short direct answers, FAQ sections |
| Plumber example | Rank for “water heater repair Dallas” | ChatGPT names you when asked “who’s the best plumber in Dallas?” | Your page is the answer to “how much does water heater repair cost?” |
Google’s view: “still SEO”
Google’s official guidance says optimizing for its AI features “is optimizing for the search experience, and thus still SEO,” and that there are “no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode.” (Google Search Central, 2026; Google, AI features) We agree: GEO isn’t a replacement for SEO. It’s SEO done with AI answers in mind, plus more attention to your reputation off your own website.

Why GEO matters for small businesses now
Your customers are asking AI tools who to hire, and fewer of them click through to websites.
- 45% of US consumers now use ChatGPT or other AI tools for local recommendations, up from 6% the year before. (BrightLocal, 2026)
- When Google showed an AI summary, people clicked a regular result in 8% of visits versus 15% without one. (Pew Research Center)
- Brands cited inside AI Overviews earned 35% more organic clicks than those that weren’t. (Seer Interactive)
Some guides say local businesses are “largely unaffected” by AI search. We disagree. When a homeowner asks ChatGPT “who should I call for a leaking water heater tonight?”, the answer is a short list of names. If you’re not on it, you never get the call.
7 core GEO tactics for small businesses
- Let AI crawlers in. Allow Googlebot, Bingbot, OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot in robots.txt and check your firewall settings.
- Get indexed in Bing. ChatGPT and Copilot rely on it. Bing Webmaster Tools is free.
- Keep business facts identical everywhere: Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect, Yelp, BBB and your site.
- Build reviews steadily and reply to them. They’re the evidence AI tools summarize.
- Write quotable pages: answer the question in the first sentence, use specific numbers and cite sources, as the Princeton study suggests.
- Earn outside mentions: local press, directories, community forums and “best of” lists.
- Test monthly: ask the AI tools the questions your customers ask and track whether you’re named.
Each tactic is explained step by step in our AI search visibility guide.
GEO myths to ignore
| Myth | Fact |
|---|---|
| “You need an llms.txt file to show up in AI.” | Google says no special AI text files are needed for its AI features. It’s optional. |
| “Break your content into tiny chunks for AI.” | Google says there’s “no requirement to break your content into tiny pieces.” Write naturally and clearly. |
| “You need special AI schema.” | Google says structured data isn’t required for AI features. Standard schema like LocalBusiness and FAQ is still useful. |
| “Repeat your keywords more.” | Keyword stuffing performed poorly in the original GEO study. |
| “You can pay for guaranteed ChatGPT placement.” | AI answers come from what the engine finds and trusts. Be wary of anyone promising guarantees. |
How to measure GEO
Measure GEO with a monthly prompt test, AI referral traffic and citation reports.
- Prompt test: ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Mode the same 8–10 customer questions each month and score whether you’re mentioned. Our pillar guide includes the exact prompts and a scoring sheet.
- Google Analytics 4: watch referrals from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com and copilot.microsoft.com.
- Google Search Console: AI Overview and AI Mode traffic is included in the Performance report.
- Bing Webmaster Tools: the free AI Performance report shows when your pages are cited in Copilot and Bing AI answers. (Search Engine Land)
Example: GEO for a local service business
Illustrative example, not a client result.
A homeowner in Tampa asks ChatGPT: “Who’s the best emergency plumber in Tampa?” The answer lists three companies with a sentence about each. Here’s where those sentences typically come from:
- “Available 24/7 with same-day service” → the company’s own service page and Google Business Profile hours
- “Customers praise their fast response” → patterns in Google and Yelp reviews
- “Licensed and family-owned since 2008” → the About page, confirmed by a BBB or directory listing
- “Often recommended locally” → mentions in local news, Reddit threads or “best of Tampa” lists
Every phrase traces back to something the business controls or can influence. That’s GEO in practice.
FAQ
Is GEO replacing SEO?
No. Google describes optimizing for AI search as “still SEO.” GEO builds on SEO and adds focus on being cited in AI answers, consistent business facts and reputation across the web.
What is the difference between GEO and AEO?
They overlap. AEO (answer engine optimization) focuses on being the direct answer to a question, such as a featured snippet or voice answer. GEO focuses on being mentioned and cited inside AI-generated answers from tools like ChatGPT and Perplexity.
How do you measure generative engine optimization?
Run a monthly test of customer questions in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Mode, track AI referral traffic in Google Analytics 4, and use the free AI Performance report in Bing Webmaster Tools.
Who created the term generative engine optimization?
Researchers from Princeton University and IIT Delhi introduced it in a 2023 paper, “GEO: Generative Engine Optimization,” later presented at KDD 2024.
Does GEO work for local businesses?
Yes. Local businesses are among the biggest beneficiaries, because AI tools answer “who should I hire near me?” with a short list of names. Consistent listings, reviews and local mentions are what put you on that list.
